Picture this. You have two women who want to get in the best shape of their life for their wedding. To hit their ideal body one woman has about 10lbs to lose, the other has about 60lbs. The plan prescribed to these two women is going to be totally different considering the circumstances right? Not necessarily. Considering there is enough time, the two will be very similar.
Keep it simple sweetheart. The fact of the matter is that getting in great shape is very simple, not to be confused with easy. If I had to come up with a different plan for someone who wanted to lose 5lbs, 10lbs, 15lbs, 20lbs, etc, I’d be pulling my hair out. The thing is, the more complicated you make it, the less likely you’ll be able to complete it. That gets you no where. As I’ve stated in prior posts, getting in shape only requires 2 things.
-Toning/building your muscles,
-Losing the fat which covers your muscles, so you can actually see that they are toned
The fact that one woman needs to lose 50lbs more than the other does not necessarily mean she takes a different approach, but rather that it will take more time to achieve her goal. Losing 10lbs can be accomplished in 30 days, 60lbs might take anywhere from 5-10x that long.
The Real Difference Between 10lbs and 60lbs
The deciding factor for the person who wants to lose a serious amount of weight is hands down, every time, CONSISTENCY. Have you ever known a considerably overweight person? If you live in the United States I’m sure you have at some point. Probably a few. And would it be a safe bet to say that that person has at least tried once in their life to lose some weight? Of course they have. Then why are they still overweight? Because somewhere along the line of following whatever diet or training program they were doing, they quit. It’s a sad but very real, and very common story. So I guess the answer to the problem is to just “not quit” right? Yep, thats right. It’s ridiculously simple, yet people underestimate how challenging it can be to “stay on the wagon”. And I’ll tell you right now, if you looking at this process as a “wagon”, you’re gonna fall off hard, just like 99% of the population who claims they can’t lose weight.
How to “Not Quit”
When you’re looking at achieving a huge transformation, it can many times be overwhelming. I remember talking with a friend of mine, Dave, who at the time was weighing 467lbs. As a football player, he slowly over the years put on more and more weight, which was acceptable for his sport. But when he stopped playing, the weight didn’t stop rising, and before he knew it, he was out of control. When I talked to him he said, “Some times i stop to think about all the weight I need to lose and I just think, I’ve got so far to go, what the point in even trying.”
The thing you need to realize is that if you’re considerably overweight, you’ve got problems. Yeah, I know that’s some tough love, but it’s true. It’s not a side effect of a few bad choices, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you’re in that position where you need to drop some serious lbs, and plan on doing so, you’re looking at a potential lifestyle complete makeover. You need to accept what you’re up against at the start, so you can be prepared. I said that the key is consistency, but PREPARATION is the key to consistency.
You have to Know why you want it
I have never seen someone who has lost a considerable amount of weight, who after doing so did not change as a person. Every time that person has become more outgoing, more self confident, more self assured, has a different outlook on life, etc. The reason people want to lose weight and get in shape in the first place is to experience things in a different way, and when they make the transformation, they do. Losing weight is never about the actual weight, it’s about what you’ll feel like when you do.
Those experiences you want, you need to visualize them, and see them as a reality. The majority of people don’t do this, which is why their goals look farther and farther away as they continue, leaving them only to abandon the process. Don’t fall victim to this. See the end result, and you will stop at nothing until you reach it, regardless of how much a transformation you’re aiming for.
Before you even think about a gameplan to reach your goal, you need to know why you have that goal, and what it will mean to you. When you’ve established that, the gameplan should not be super specialized, but instead it should be as simple as possible. Stick to the basic 3-4x week of intense exercise, with a solid nutrition plan. It is a fact that you will lose the weight, how much you lose depends on your consistency.
