Rainy Rhode Island Wedding: Katherine & Craig {Sarah Rhoads Photography}

Side note - our For Japan With Love fundraiser was last night. I am still smiling and my cheeks hurt. That’s how awesome it was. I got the biggest hug from my lovely friends of Utterly Engaged. Like, the biggest hug ever. So happy inside and can’t wait to share more. Until then…

Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain ~Author Unknown

Is that not the best quote ever? I pretty much love it {totally crediting the amazing photographer, Sarah Rhoads, on finding it} and it perfectly describes today’s rainy Rhode Island wedding. I think most brides will agree that they have a tiny fear in the back of their mind that it might rain on their wedding day… but Katherine and Craig completely embraced the rain, and what better excuse to rock a gorgeous pair of turquoise Hunter wellies?

From Katherine, the bride: Our wedding took place at Castle Hill Inn in Newport, RI. We picked Newport because we had some of our first dates there. I went to school in Bristol, RI and Craig was living in NH. Our first date included driving around the Newport mansions and site seeing.

Craig and I are both designers and photographers so we wanted to create lots of details that reflected who we are. Craig designed the invitation suite and our friend letter pressed them for us.

When it came to centerpieces we wanted to do something besides flowers. My mom and I spent about a year going to antiques stores searching for candelabras.  Each table had a different piece with votive candles on them.  We found out 2 days before the wedding we weren’t going to be able to use the tall tapper candles we had planned on. (due to the fire code) Our florist came to the rescue with low votives! We also had bright pink votives with flower petals on the table too.

I wanted to jazz up the tables a little more than just the linens the venue provided. I found burlap to make runners with. This was a great solution because burlap is not expensive. I stenciled and painted a ring a hearts in the center, which matched the hearts on the initiations.  We had my dad create table numbers out of wood and then we painted them. I loved how the tables looked! My mom also made us Mr and Mrs signs from burlap for our chairs.

For the place cards we bought some cute paper off Etsy and hand wrote the names. We glued a cute button to each card. We found a great sandwich board at Homegoods a week or so before the weddings and decided to clip the papers on it. Another paper product we made was drink stirrers. We used photos from our engagement session and attached them to wooden stirrers.

Our bridal parties lived all over the country. We wanted getting dresses and suits to be easy for everyone. My girls and I did lots of emailing and found great dresses online, which everyone was able to order. They all bought their size so no alterations needed! The guys went to Men’s Warehouse since they have locations everywhere. As we were planning the wedding we kept laughing because so many items were purchases online and at discount websites. It took a little more searching than just going to one bridal shop, but it was so worth it!

When we woke up on the wedding day the sun was shinning and it was perfect weather. As the day went on the clouds and rain came in. We didn’t let it bother us or stop us from going outside and taking photos! I put on my Hunters and we went for it! I’m so glad we did, I love our photos even more with the rain. Sarah + Chris (Photographers) and Drew + Ben (Videographers) were so amazing and trekked out in the rain with us.  I would tell Brides to not worry about the weather, just embrace it! You are able to celebrate and have an amazing day no matter what’s going on outside so there is no need to worry. During our ceremony there were really loud fog horns going off. It felt so Newport and added so much charm.

Our final detail that was actually the first thing we had planned was the favors. Our last name is Henry so we gave each guest an Oh Henry bar on his or her plate. The candy was what inspired the yellow and brown color theme. They were a hit!

Aren’t these two just the cutest? I think the rain was in their favor on this one!

    I love this wedding. And most specifically because I love Katherine’s photography. It was great to feature their work on my blog recently. It’s nice to see them in front of the lens… Beautiful wedding. The rain gives it that much more emotion and character!

    So romantic and sweet! My new favorite commerical is the one for the car company with the song about “I Love the Rain” and they run to the car! She is just so adorable in those blue rainboots and her bouquet is just so beautiful, love the soft colors.

    This wedding is fabulous! Aside from my completely unreasonable Hunter addiction, I have to say that the ‘Mrs.’ chair steals my heart. And anyone from New Hampshire {groom} is automatically awesome.

    Beautiful wedding, the rain makes it so atmospheric! The invite with the twine knot is just perfect - it reminds me of my mother-in-law saying ‘a wet knot never slips’

    awww, i love the little blue sailboat at the bottom of their invite! Adorable. Obviously the turquoise rain boots have my heart and my groom almost wore the same tie her hubby did - it looks good on him! I love a couple who can embrace whatever the day brings - the lighthouse shots are beautiful!!!

    I LOVE her Hunters! I haven’t seen them in that color. What a beautiful wedding. I need to remember that quote and perhaps dance in the rain a little more often? I certainly do my fair share of walking the dogs in it ;)
