Floral Spotlight: Astilbe

{image by Windy Dougall, florals by The Floral Lab

It’s been a while since our last Floral Spotlight, but this amazing wedding on Style Me Pretty had some blooms I just couldn’t get out of my head. Whimsical, romantic and light, these gorgeous Astilbe {thanks Natalie for clueing me in to what they are!} are absolutely gorgeous. Kind of like taking baby’s breath to the next level, don’t you think?

Appropriately nicknamed “feather flower” or “false goat’s beard”, astilbe blooms in summer to early fall, and comes in shades of peach, lime, purple, white, red, light pink, and lavender. It’s also an inexpensive addition to your wedding day florals, as its rich, dense foliage and feathery, summer blooms can fill a lot of space with just a few stems. How about we take a look at these lovelies in action?

Hmmm…I might just have to add these to my inspiration board! I know there was a hip feather trend for a while, and while I thought was an amazing texture, I was not hip enough for that…but this feels like a beautiful compromise! Amazing texture…and so, so sweet!

And I hear ya on Martha. I was just thinking that the entire Internet needed to have a brush up on properly crediting images and ideas! Not that I’m flawless, I’m sure I’ve screwed up, but it irks me to no end when you love an image or idea and there’s no credit at all. You stuck at a dead end, but longing for more!

Thank you for the floral spotlight. I do not have a green thumb, and almost never know what kind of flowers I’m looking at. This type is beautiful! I am so bookmarking it to show to my florist! Thanks Jacin!

So weird that you posted this today… I was literally JUST thinking about that flower and how I’ve seen it around.. remember someone asking what it was and finally getting an answer.. but I couldn’t remember who asked or what it was. Ultimately.. thank you!! I just love the look of this and since baby’s breath isn’t an option for us, this very well could be!! Just stunning.

Oh I’m loving this. I am having my girls hold only baby’s breath down the isle because its my fav also. I think I might add some of the astible into my bouquet!

OMG - I love this. I’m allergic to baby’s breath and love the idea of using astilbe instead. I have to say, it’s so much prettier too.

  • Lisa says on August 22, 2011 Reply

Jacin, you totally read my mind! After I commented on your picture on pinterest asking what these flowers were, I thought “Hmm, I hope she does a floral spotlight on these!” :) You know I love your floral spotlights, and this is no exception…that last bouquet is to die for! Hope you had a great weekend!

yes!!! this is kinda funny that you have this post. i have an inspiration board scheduled this week and i have the image of the bride with the pink bouquet from the floral lab and i asked what they were because i am in love with them. and now i know! yay. for some reason they remind me of lavender if lavender were to fray or something. thanks for sharing!
